John Hemenway has been the head basketball coach at Berea College in 2010. In his first four seasons at the helm of the Mountaineer men’s basketball program, Berea has posted overall records of 17-15, 11-19, 15-16 and 17-14. Last season, despite losing three games by a single point and an overtime game, the Mountaineers went 5-2 down the stretch including an 82-79 win at Asbury University in the KIAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Berea’s season ended with a 78-69 loss to Indiana University Southeast in the KIAC Tournament Semifinals and a 17-14 overall record.  Daishon Robinson was named 1^st Team All-KIAC and KIAC “Newcomer of the Year” after leading the team in scoring, assists and steals. After nine years as a collegiate head coach, Hemenway now owns a career record of 175-113(.607 winning percentage) and a 99-63 mark against conference opponents. His teams have averaged over 19 wins per season and have made four appearances in the NAIA II National Tournament.

Hemenway came to Berea College from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD where he was the head basketball coach from 2005-2010. His Tiger teams posted an impressive overall record of 115-49 (.701 winning percentage), made four consecutive NAIA II National Tournament appearances and won the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2010. Under Hemenway’s leadership, DWU won the most games in school history over a five-year period (115) and was one of seven schools in NAIA II basketball to win at least 100 games in four seasons from 2007 to 2010. His teams defeated 17 opponents ranked in the NAIA Top 25, averaged 23 wins per season and boasted a 25-game winning streak at home against conference foes. Remarkably, Hemenway recruited and coached four different players that were named NAIA Division II 1^st Team All-Americans in a five-year span (Brock Seim, 2007, Preston Broughton, 2008, Darrin Dorsey, 2010, Brady Wiebe, 2011). Hemenway’s teams twice upset the NAIA’s top-ranked team by defeating #1 Sioux Falls in 2007 and #1 Morningside in 2008. For his efforts, he was named 2007 GPAC “Coach of the Year” and South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association “Coach of the Year” in 2007 and 2010.

Before becoming a head coach, Hemenway served as an assistant coach at the University of South Dakota (2002-05), Chaminade University (2000-02) and Morningside College (1997-00). He played his collegiate basketball at the University of South Dakota (1991-96) for Dave Boots, where he was selected to the All-North Central Conference 1^st Team in 1995 and 1996. He helped the Coyotes win two North Central Conference championships, two North Central Region championships and finished his playing career at South Dakota with an 89-25 record. Following his senior season, he was the recipient of the 1996 John Van Why award which is awarded to the Most Outstanding Male Athlete at the University of South Dakota. Hemenway graduated as the holder of six school records and was inducted into the South Dakota Coyote Hall of Fame on September 20^th, 2008.

Hemenway graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and received his Master of Arts degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1998.

Hemenway is married to the former Jessica Maddox and they reside in Berea with their three children, Jack (7), Katherine (5) and Owen (2).
