Baseball Sweeps Sunday Set at Oakland City

The Mountaineers rallied behind the right arm of Lawton Jackson and the bats of Ryan Akins and Jake Taylor to win the opening game of the day.  Down 2-0 after three innings, the Berea offense broke through with single runs in the 4th and 6th innings to knot the game at 2-2.  After a scoreless seventh frame sent the game into extra innings, the Mountaineers capitalized on several Oakland City miscues to take a 3-2 lead in the 8th.  The margin was extended when Akins delivered a two-run double to left and Taylor followed with a sacrifice fly to right to finish off the 6-2 win.  Akins finished the game 1-2 with two RBI and two runs scored and Taylor went 2-3 at the plate while also driving in two runs.

Chad Brown started on the hill for the Blue Crew and tossed 2.1, allowing just three hits and one earned run.  Just a day after earning a complete game win in the series opener, senior Lawton Jackson came out of the bullpen and went 3.2 innings, giving up just two hits while striking out three.  Freshman Chase O'Conner picked up the win as he struck out two and allowed just one hit in the final two innings.

Akins' offense carried the Mountaineers again in game two.  His first inning single and double in the second each drove in a run as Berea built a 4-0 lead.  The senior catcher would later add a sacrifice fly to finish the game 2-3 with three RBI as Berea captured the 6-4 win.  A quartet of arms limited the Mighty Oaks to just three hits in game two.  Despite allowing five walks, Tyler Pope tossed three no-hit innings to earn the win.  Nolan Sanders pitched the final two innings to earn his first save.

With the Sunday sweep, the Mountaineers run their overall record to 4-9 on the season.  The team will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Wilmore, KY, for a doubleheader against former KIAC foe Asbury University.  First pitch is set for 4:00 PM.
