#12 Berea Falls on the Road at Centre College 7-1

Danville, KY- #12 Berea returned to the road after a four-game home stand, traveling to Danville, KY to take on in-state opponent, the Centre College Colonels. The two teams played each other at the beginning of the month in a game in which the Mountaineers won 8-7 in ten innings.

Andrew Akins recorded the first hit of the game and moved to second base on a wild pitch to put himself in scoring position. A fly out followed Akins before Ron Overstreet earned a walk with his patience at the plate to put runners on first and second base. Berea was unable to convert any of those baserunners to runs as the game remained scoreless after the first inning. The score remained tied at zero through the top of the fifth inning even though the Mountaineers had hits from Nathaniel Summey in the third inning and Nicholas Bottom in the fifth. Centre scored the first run of the game in the bottom half of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. After three more runs gave the home team a 4-0 advantage, Berea threatened to breakthrough on the scoreboard in the seventh inning.

Devin Belleville began the inning with a single to shortstop and moved to second on an error by the third baseman which allowed Caleb Gupton to get on base. A hit by pitch put Bottom on first to load the bases. Belleville would be out at home on the next batter's fielder's choice before a ground out ended the Mountaineers' threat. Trailing 6-0 after two more runs by Centre in the bottom of the seventh inning, time was running out on Berea's comeback attempt. An Akins walked in the eighth inning quickly turned into a tour of the bases as he moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball. Runners were on first and third when Overstreet earned his second walk of the game. A wild pitch moved both the baserunners a base, giving the Mountaineers their first run of the game to make the score 6-1. Berea was unable to convert any more runs in the inning and the remainder of the game as Centre went on to win the game 7-1.

Akins led the way at the plate for the Mountaineers, going 1-3 and scoring the lone run of the game for Berea. Summey, Ryan Blevens, Belleville, and Bottom were the other Mountaineers players to finish with hits in the game. Griffen Norris started on the bump, pitching 5.2 innings.
