Mountaineers Drop Three Game Series To Lions

Demorst, GA- Berea College baseball traveled to Piedmont College on Thursday, February 22nd to play a three game series. The Mountaineers dropped all three games against the Lions bringing their overall season record to 2-7 and 0-3 in conference play. 

In the first game of the series the Mountaineers could not get much going for them and were defeated 11-0. They were held to 4 hits in the outing. Nathaniel Summey went 2 for 4 at the plate and the other 2 hits came from Ryan Blevins who went 1 for 4 and Tanner Crowe who went 1 for 3 at the plate. Griffen Norris was the starting pitcher for the mountaineers where he gave up 4 earned runs on 8 hits and 2 walks through 5 innings pitched. Aaron Duncan threw in relief allowing 3 earned runs in two innings pitched and freshmen Baylor Manire finished the game throwing the last inning where he allowed one earned run on 3 hits.

The Mountaineers struggled the second game as well in their 14-2 loss as they were held to only one hit. Nicholas Bottom had that hit going 1 for 2 on the day. The 2 Mountaineer runs came off of walks and errors. Michael Smither got the start throwing 4 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits. Zach Withers threw in relief throwing one inning and allowing 3 earned runs and TC Eads threw 1 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs as well.

 The third game of the weekend was a much closer matchup for Berea as they battled in what was a close game before losing in the later innings 15-6.  The Mountaineers grabbed 11 hits in the outing by a number of players. The offensive charge was led by Senior Caleb Gupton had his best offensive performance of the season going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's. Tanner Crowe had another great game going 3 for 4 with 1 RBI and scored 1 run. Nathaniel Summey had a solid game as well going 2 for 5 scoring 2 runs and grabbing 1 RBI. Nicholas Bottom, Ty Williams, and Cambridge Dacci all had hits in the contest as well. Josh Wilson started on the mound where he threw 3 innings. Pitching struggled in this game as the 5 pitchers that threw combined for 14 earned runs on 15 hits and 13 walks.

They will be back in action on Tuesday, February 27 at 6:00pm against Centre College at home in a single game.
