Mountaineers Fall to Colonels 9-1

Berea, KY- The Mountaineers took a tough loss in their home opener on Tuesday against the Centre Colonels.  This loss brings their overall record to 2-8.

The Mountaineers tied the game at 1 in the 3rd inning and held the tie through the fourth before giving up a 4 run inning in the top of the 5th. Berea gave up 3 more runs in the 6th then held the colonels until the 9th inning when they gave up their 9th run of the game. The Mountaineers were held to 6 hits and 1 run. Nathaniel Summey had a good game going 2 for 4 at the plate with 1 RBI. Catcher Andrew Akins went 1 for 3 in the game and the other 3 hits for Berea came from Nicholas Bottom, Ty Williams, and Tanner Crowe who all went 1 for 4 in the contest.

Berea started freshmen Kelby Storm but went with the whole staff approach subbing a new pitcher in every inning after the 3rd. The pitching staff gave up 8 earned runs on 11 hits and 3 errors in the matchup. The end result was not what the Mountaineers hoped for but they did show signs of life early in the game but just couldn't seem to put enough hits together to produce runs after the 3rd.

Berea will host Covenant College this weekend looking to grab their first conference win of the series in the 3 game set.  The first game is set to Start Friday, March 3rd at 3:00pm.  On Saturday the Mountaineers will play a double header against the Scots with the first game starting at 12:00pm.
