After a high scoring first game, Berea drops two against Huntingdon

Berea College had a couple of games that were not only unusual for them, but unusual in the game of baseball on Saturday, April 7th. The Mountaineers went 0-2 in a home series against Huntington College in what was a very long day of baseball. Griffen Norris got the start on the mound in game one for Berea where he threw for 6 innings allowing 2 earned runs and 5 unearned runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. What was rather unusual about the game was that Berea led at many points in the contest as their offense was clicking on all cylinders, but they ended up losing the game with a final score of 27-17. A score like that is nearly unheard of in baseball. The mountaineers would have won by a long shot had it not been for an 11 run 7th inning from Huntington, followed by a 9 run 9th inning. That deficit proved to be too much even though the mountaineers racked up 8 runs in the last 3 innings.

The second game was another offensive game for Huntington as they won 19-4 in 7innings. Senior Michael Smither got the start in what could have been his last start of his career. T.C. Eads and Zach Withers followed him out of the pen. Overall it was a rough weekend added to the end of a rough season for the mountaineers. But there have been some good building blocks come forward this season as Junior Andrew Akins went on a tear in the latter half of the season improving his conference batting average .460 and putting him in the top 2 in the conference in batting average. There have been spots in the season where young talent has shined as well in Freshmen Ty Williams, Tanner Crowe, and T.C. Eads who played mostly a pitching role in the beginning of the season before showing impressive ability at third base and at the plate hitting .324 on the season and .393 in conference batting averages. The Mountaineers have two home games this week on Tuesday, April 10 at 5 pm and 8 pm against Transylvania University. This will conclude their 35 game season.
