Mountaineers Split in Doubleheader Against Pioneers

Berea, KY - Berea College baseball ended their season in fashion on Tuesday April 10th as they split in a double header against Transylvania University. The Mountaineers lost a hard fought battle with a final score of 2-4 in the first game. Josh Wilson got the start on the mound and had his best outing of the season throwing 8 innings allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits while racking up 7 strikeouts and only 2 walks. Devin Belleville and Andrew Akins continued their hot streaks at the plate as Devin hit a homer in his first at bat of the day and finished the day 1 for 3 and scored the teams other run after a walk. Akins went 2 for 4 to continue what has been an absolute tear in the second half of the year.

Game 2 proved to be an even better game as tension was high and the game went into extra innings. Griffen Norris got the start on the mound in game 2 and had a good performance as he threw for 5 innings allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits. Kelby Storm threw in relief for Mountaineers where he threw for 2 innings allowing 0 earned runs on 0 hits. Michael Smither finished the game on the mound for Berea having a very memorable last appearance. He threw for 4 innings allowing 0 hits and grabbing 3 strikeouts. Devin Belleville had another good game at the plate going 2 for 5. Ryan Blevins had a good game at the plate as well going 2 for 4 and Nicholas Bottom did the same. Caleb Gupton had his only hit of the game in the 11th inning in his last at bat at Berea College, Cambridge Dacci entered as the pinch runner and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ty Williams then hit a ball up the middle that got through and scored Cam from second for the walk off win in the bottom of the 11th inning.

The Mountaineers had a tough season overall finishing 5-29-1 but did have some good performers as individuals throughout the season. Freshman Ty Williams received the conference sportsmanship award. Andrew Akins hit .337 on the season and .460 in conference batting average. Thankfully the Mountaineers sent the deserving group of seniors out on good note with the walkoff win.
