BEREA, KY- The Berea College baseball team hosted conference opponent Methodist University over the weekend. The two teams played a full, first game of the scheduled double header, but were forced to resume the intermediate match in the top of the 2nd on Sunday morning. The Monarchs swept the Mountaineers in three contests.

Game 1 featured Berea's senior pitcher Griffen Norris. The righty gave Berea a quality start, posting 5.0 innings pitched, but the Mountaineers failed to get the victory. Dylan Sallee, and Aaron Duncan followed in Norris's effort, finishing the final four innings. However, the Mountaineer offense could not get the bats going. Berea jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st, but allowed the Monarchs to tie it up in the next half inning. As the game progressed, errors and unearned runs haunted the Mountaineers on their quest for victory. Methodist eventually won the hard fought contest, 6-4.

Notable Performances-

Josh Wilson: 2-4, 1 Run

Nick Bottom: 2-4, 3 RBI's

Andrew Akins: 1-4, 1 RBI

The second contest was unorthodox contest at the least. Josh Wilson got the start for the Mountaineers, but after only facing three batters, Wilson tweaked a muscle in his back. The injury set up sophomore Baylor Manier, to get an early workload, but after getting the 1st out of the 2nd inning, he also suffered an injury. Freshman Bubba Lake was then called upon out of the Mountaineer bullpen. Lake faced a couple batters until the game was postponed by rain. Resuming on Sunday morning, Lake only recorded 0.1 innings pitched. Three more Berea pitchers entered the game and dueled for the Mountaineers over the course of 7 innings. Methodist won 18-3.

Notable Performances-

Logan Gayheart: 1-2, HR

The 2nd Sunday contest immediately followed the resumed match-up. Berea started sophomore T.C. Eads, but he only tossed 3 innings in the contest. Brendan Grider followed Eads with 4 innings of work. Grant Cobb came in to pitch the last 2 innings. Methodist continued to get the best of the Mountaineers, and errors continued to haunt the Mountaineers. The Monarchs capped off the Mountaineers with a 11-2 victory.

Notable Performances-

Tanner Crowe: 2-3

Ty Williams: 1-4, 2 RBI

Grant Cobb: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K's

The men will look to bounce back in the coming week. Wednesday, the team travels to Lexington to face Transylvania in a mid-week twin bill. The first contest begins at 1:00pm. In the weekend series, Berea will travel to Lookout Mountain, GA, to face conference opponent Covenant College. Action starts Friday at 3:00 followed by a Saturday double header.
