BEREA, KY.- Berea College men's basketball dropped a heartbreaker on Wednesday night, losing 95-94 in 2OT in their home opener.
The Mountaineer's (1-2) played well throughout the game, shooting 46.6% from the field and 34.5% from beyond the arc. However, they struggled at the free throw line, only shooting 53.3% and missing a couple of free throws at the end of regulation. The Mountaineers were out rebounded by the Pioneers 50-44, out assisted 16-15, but still created 17 turnovers.
The Mountaineers were led by junior guard Torell Carter, who scored a team high 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Sophomore center Andrew Doty also added 15 points and 9 boards. Behind Doty and Carter, was freshman guard Kevion Hudson, who scored 14 points and added 8 rebounds.
Jamal Weaver for the Pioneers led the scoring in the game with 42 points, going 6-10 from beyond the arc and led the game in shooting percentage as well, going 12-19 from the field. Tyrese Duncan and Devin Baker also contributed 13 and 12 points respectively for the Pioneers.
Going back and forth all game, the Mountaineers had multiple chances in the closing minutes of regulation to seal the game with free-throws. However, the Mountaineers missed 3 out the last 4 free throws attempted and allowed the Pioneers to make a comeback to tie the game. In the 2nd OT, with the Mountaineers up by 2, Jamal Weaver was able to hit his 6th three-pointer to seal the game for the Pioneers with 2.1 seconds left.
Up next, the Mountaineers will play in their homecoming game this Saturday against Campbellsville University-Somerset (Nov 16). Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m at the Roland Wierwille Court.
