Slow Start Leads to Loss

BEREA, KY. – The Mountaineers playing their 2nd game in two days fell to Averett University 71-65.

The Mountaineers got off to a slow start in the first half of the game.  The Averett Cougars went to the locker room at half time with a lead of 44-32.  The Cougars were in the lead for almost the entire game. The Mountaineers came out in the second half with a sense of urgency.  They scored more points that the Cougars in the second half but just could not come out of the deficit they got in during the first half.  

The Mountaineers were led by Junior guard Torell Carter (Whitesburg, KY), who had 22 points and 5 rebounds. Carter was 9-16 from the field, also going 4-4 on his free throw attempts. Behind Carter was Quae Charlton (Richmond, KY), who had 14 points and 3 rebounds. Isaac Caudill also added 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.

The Cougars were led by Raymond Bullock III who had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Lamb shot 7-9 from the field and went 2-6 on his free throw attempts. Montre' Cash also added 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the Cougars.

The Mountaineers came up short scoring 32 in the first half and 33 in the second half. Their strong defense showed up once again, forcing 17 turnovers and having 7 steals in the game.

Up next, the Mountaineers will play at LaGrange College (Jan. 18), for their seventh conference game of the season. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
