Men’s Golf Secures Shovel in Match Against Alice Lloyd

The Berea College golf team defeated Alice Lloyd College 4 ½ to 1 ½ in a Ryder Cup format match hosted at Gibson Bay Golf Club.

The annual match between the two teams features four 9-hole rounds of golf structured in a Ryder Cup-style event.  The first 18 holes were played 2v2 with the pair playing best ball for the first nine holes and alternate shot for the back nine.  The final 18 holes were played as singles match play.  The winning team is presented with a shovel to be displayed at their home institution, symbolizing the unique connection the two work colleges share.

Berea College took the title Saturday afternoon, winning each of the 2v2 matches to gain the first two points heading into singles match play.  Steven Haddix (SR/Albany, KY) and Benjamin Piercefield (SO/Kuttawa, KY) each won their head to head match to secure the win for the Mountaineers.  Austin Worley (FR/Louisville, KY) picked up half a point with a tie and Chad Peruggia (SR/Brooklyn, NY) dropped his match for the final margin of victory.

The team will head to Cincinnati Thursday and Friday to compete in the Cincinnati Christian Invitational hosted by Miami-Whitewater.  The match will be the squad's final tune-up before next week's conference tournament.
