Berea Stumbles Against Maryville College

Berea, KY- The men's soccer team returned to the field at the Berea College Sports Complex this evening for another game in the USA South. Today's game saw the Mountaineers take on the Scots of Maryville College, a divisional opponent from the West.

A free kick a little over a minute into the game set up a scoring opportunity Berea capitalized on, as Pedro Herrera gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead on the beaming kick. Berea had a few more chances to add to their lead but the ball did not go into the back of the net. Superb play from goalkeeper Noah DeHart and the strong defense of the Mountaineers kept Maryville out of the net in the first half, allowing Berea to lead at halftime 1-0.

The tough play of the defense and DeHart continued in the beginning minutes of the second half as the Mountaineers' offense fell out of rhythm. The game became tied though in the 66th minute as the Scots scored their first goal of the game. Maryville took the lead less than a minute later and Berea would be unable to rally back, falling by a final score of 4-1. DeHart finished with seven saves on 11 shots on goal while Herrera scored the only goal for the Mountaineers.

Berea heads back on the road as they travel to Brevard, NC to take on USA South opponent Brevard College. The game will not go count towards either team's conference record though as Brevard is currently reclassifying from NCAA Division II to Division III and ineligible to compete for conference championships.
