Fayetteville, N.C. - The Berea College men's soccer team traveled to North Carolina on Sunday to take on Methodist University. The Mountaineers battled hard with the Monarchs before a late second half goal lifted Methodist to a 1-0 win. Berea's goalie Clay Sheaffer finished with four saves in the loss.

The first half was fairly quiet as both teams combined for 12 shots and only one of those shots was on target. Patrick Vazquez of the Monarchs, got a good look in the 37th minute, but Sheaffer kept the slate clean in the first half making it scoreless heading into halftime.

Methodist picked it up in the second half and began to get things rolling. The Monarchs had eight shots of their own in the second half and it was Nick Bryant who was able to squeeze one by Shaeffer to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute. Berea's Junior Gyamfi got a nice shot on goal in the 89th minute, but Methodist's goalie Scott Brecke secured the shutout and the Monarchs escaped with a 1-0 victory at home.

Methodist held the 15-7 advantage in shots and had the slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Mountaineers will wrap up their season at home on Saturday, October 27 as they host the Pfeiffer University Falcons at 11 a.m. at the Berea College Sports Complex.
