MEN’S TENNIS GO 0-2 IN FIRST HOME MATCHES OF 2017

Berea, KY- In the first match of the day, Berea's Men took on Brescia University. Brescia only having 4 available players started the day down 0-3, defaulting number 3 doubles and number 5 and 6 singles.

First on court were the doubles matches, where in a competitive match not outlined by the score saw Brescia defeat Zachary White and Austin Worley at the number 1 spot 8-2. Following that loss, Brescia scored another win in number 2 doubles action, where Christopher Malpartida and Ethan Hughes playing for the first time together went down 8-0.

Those two wins brought Brescia to 2-3 going into the singles play. Playing at number 1 for the first time, Avery Matthews played well but wasn't experienced enough to push Horcajado of Brescia, falling 6-0, 6-0. Zachary White at number 2 played an extremely grueling match against Alcazar falling to the Brescia number 2 7-5, 6-3. Austin Worley and Christopher Malpartida also loss tough matches at the number 3 and 4 spot respectively.

Overall, Brescia held on despite starting 0-3 down to defeat Berea's Men 6-3.

In the second match up of the day, Berea's Men took the court against University of Pikeville, where there was some really great play. In Doubles action University of Pikeville took the number 1 and 2 spot wins. At the number 3 spot Avery Matthews and Ethan Hughes pulled out a tight win to keep Berea close heading into the singles down 1-2.

At the top spot although a very well contested match point by point Austin Worley fell to Bernabeu 6-0, 6-2. Sam Slater and Ethan Hughes in the 2 and 3 spot fought hard but experience won out as University of Pikeville took those two matches 6-0, 6-0. At the number 4 spot Avery Matthews continued to find his game losing a tough battle to Rodenbusch of Pikeville. At number 5 in his second ever singles match Christopher Malpartida battled well and stayed tough to outlast Hall of Pikeville 6-2, 6-4. In the last match of the day, Isaac Domenech in his first ever tennis match defeated Mejia of Pikeville in a commanding score line of 6-2, 6-1.

Next up Berea's Men head to Union College on Saturday, March 25th and then head to Transylvania University on Sunday, March 26th.
