Mountaineers Kick Off Outdoor At Rhodes

Memphis, TN – This weekend the Berea track and Field team kicked off their 2019 outdoor season at the Rhodes College Invitational. The meet included over 30 teams from D1, D2, D3, and NAIA divisions.

On Friday, junior Landon Bond and senior Tanner Carson competed in the 5,000 meter race. Bond finished 11th with a personal record time of 15:01. Carson finished 20th in 15:31. Competing in the javelin throw was junior Austin Weber finishing 26th with a throw of 32.38 meters. Junior Richard Brayton competed in the hammer throw finishing 24th with a throw 29.44 meters.

Most of the team competed on Saturday with the filed events starting off the day. Brayton competed in the shot put and placed 19th with throw 11.54 meters. In the long jump, John Ball jumped 5.09 meters finishing in 25th place and Austin Weber finished one place behind in 26th with a jump of 4.78 meters.

Starting off the running events for the day were multiple Mountaineers competing in the 1 mile race. Freshman Sair Salgado was the first Mountaineer across the line finishing 8th in 4:23. Tanner Carson finished just behind in 4:24. Other finishers included freshman Gage Cousineau in 4:42, freshman Jose Villegas in 4:44, and freshman Gabriel Johnson in 4:46. Top finishers in the 400 meter dash included senior Issac Domenech in 37th with a time of 54.39 seconds and freshman Steven Mickens in 44th with a time of 56.08. The top competitors in 100 meter dash were sophomore Corey Carrol finishing 12th in 11.00 seconds and freshman John Ball who finished 42nd in 11.92 seconds. In the 800 meter run, the first Mountaineer to finish was Salgado finishing 12th in 1:59. Freshman Johnathon West finished just behind in 20th place in 2:01. In the 200 meter dash, Ball finished 53rd in 24.26 and junior Zach Campbell finished 56th in 24.45. In the final track event of the day, Senior Corbin Flege competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Flege finished 22nd in 10:56.

Next up for the Mountaineers is the Transy Pioneer Invitational on March 22nd and 23rd.
