Wilmore, KY- The softball team returned to the diamond on the road, as they traveled to Wimore, KY to play in a doubleheader. The team was a guest to former KIAC foe and rival, the Asbury University Eagles, looking to leave town with a doubleheader sweep.
The first game in the series started off as a defensive stalwart as the two teams combined for five hits over the first three innings. Asbury's home run in the bottom of the fourth put the first run on the board, as the Eagles left the inning leading 1-0. Mercedes Stanfield's single to center allowed Berea to respond with a run of their own, as Hannah Carter crossed home plate on the hit to tie the score 1-1. The game moved to extra innings as the defenses for each team picked up again, as the two teams combined for just one hit over the last two regulation innings. Berea could not break the tie in the top of the eighth as Asbury scored the winning run in their half of the eighth inning, taking the first game of the doubleheader 2-1.
On the mound for the Mountaineers was Katelyn Blair, pitching the complete game and giving up five hits, two earned runs, walking two batters while striking out seven. Leading the way behind the plate was Carter, who finished 3-4 with a run batted in. Stanfield finished with the only RBI for Berea. The team finished with seven hits for the game.
The second game began similar to the first, as neither team could muster offense to put runs on the board. The momentum changed in the bottom of the fourth though, as Asbury scored the first two runs of game and entered the fifth inning with a 2-0 advantage. The Mountaineers could not overturn the Eagles lead in the top of the fifth and saw the deficit increase as the sixth inning began, trailing 4-0. The deficit proved too much for Berea to overcome and the team fell in the second game by a final score of 4-0.
Kourtney Parker led the way for the Mountaineers at the plate, finishing 2-3. Taylor Flowers pitched all six innings, giving up ten hits, three earned runs and striking out three batters.
