Mountaineers Fall to the University of the Cumberlands During Mid-Week Doubleheader

Berea, KY- Berea College's softball team faced the University of the Cumberlands for a mid-week doubleheader at the Berea College Sports Complex.

To start out the day in the first inning, although two batters were walked, there were no runs or no hits for the Patriots. In the bottom of the first for the Mountaineers the first three batters were struck out. During the top of the second the Patriots scored one run on three hits and no errors. During the bottom of the second inning, Mountaineers player Parker got hit by a pitch. Following that, Nash singled which advanced Parker to second. Then Smith reached first on an error but batted Parker in. Hackney reached base on a fielder's choice and got Nash out at home plate. The next batter got out which finished the inning. During the top of the third inning the Patriots scored seven runs on three hits and two Berea College errors. In the bottom of the third the first three batters for the Mountaineers got out. The top of the fourth inning saw the Patriots score three runs on two hits and three errors by Berea. In the bottom of the fourth inning the first three batters got out. For the top of the fifth the University of the Cumberlands scored five runs on six hits and one error. In the bottom of the fifth Parsons walked where she was left on base to finish the game due to the run rule. The University of the Cumberlands landed the victory against Berea College 16-1.

Nash had the only hit of the game and Smith had the lone RBI. Howard pitched the full game for the Mountaineers.

In the last game of the doubleheader, the Patriots started the first inning with no runs on one hit. The Mountaineers first three batters got out. In the top of the second inning the Patriots earned one run on zero hits. In the bottom of the second the Mountaineers next three batters got out. In the top of the third inning the Patriots scored three runs with four hits and no errors. In the bottom of the third, Garcia reached first on an error where she was left stranded on the base path to finish the inning. In the top of the fourth inning the Patriots earned zero runs with one hit. During the bottom of the fourth, Mercedes Stanfield hit a single and she would stay on first to finish out the inning. In the top of the fifth, the University of the Cumberlands earned one run on two hits and no errors. In the bottom of the fifth inning for the Mountaineers Parsons doubled to start the inning which was followed by Smiths single that scored Parsons. Smith would be left on base to finish out the inning. In the top of the sixth inning the Patriots would score five runs on five hits and no errors. In the bottom of the sixth inning Lanham would single for the Mountaineers, followed by Stanfield being walked. Lanham stole to third where Stanfield followed her to second which would end the game due to mercy rule. The Mountaineers fell to the University of the Cumberlands 10-1.

Lanham, Stanfield, Parsons, and Smith would lead the Mountaineers with one hit each. Smith had the lone RBI. Smith also pitched the whole game for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on the road March 25th when they take on Oakland City in a 1:00pm and 3:00pm doubleheader.
