Softball Split Doubleheader Against Carlow

Berea, KY- The Berea College softball team played a doubleheader this Sunday against the Carlow University Celtics.

In the top of the first inning the Celtics scored 0 runs on one hit. In the bottom of the first inning for the Mountaineers Setters doubled followed by a sacrifice bunt from Lanham to advance Setters to third. Mercedes Stanfield was hit by a pitch the next at bat. Mercedes Stanfield stole second as Setters stole home. Stanfield would be left on second to finish the inning. During the top of the second the Celtics scored 2 runs with 2 hits. In the bottom of the second for the Mountaineers Parsons was hit by pitch followed by a sacrifice bunt by Hackney to advance Parsons to second where she would stay for the remainder of the inning. In the top of the third Carlow University scored 0 runs on 0 hits. In the bottom of the third for the Mountaineers Nash reached first on an error followed by Setters sacrifice bunt to move Nash to second. Nash advanced to third on a wild pitch where she stayed for the remainder of the inning. In the top of the fourth inning the Celtics scored 2 runs on 2 hits. In the bottom of the fourth the Mountaineers first three batters got out. During the top of the fifth inning the Celtics scored 3 runs on 4 hits. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Mountaineer's Madison Stanfield singled followed by Nash single. Setters sacrifice bunt moved Stanfield to third and Nash to second where they would stay for the rest of the inning. In the top of the sixth inning the Celtics scored 2 runs on 2 hits. In the bottom of the sixth inning the Mountaineer's Mercedes Stanfield singled followed by Parker's single. Parsons was hit by a pitch to have bases loaded and the next three batters got out to end the game do to a run rule.

Carlow University defeated the Mountaineers 9-1. Nash, Setters, Stanfield, Parker, and Stanfield all had one hit for the Mountaineers. Howard pitched this game.

In the top of the second inning the Celtics scored 0 runs with 2 hits. During the bottom of the second inning the Mountaineer's Parkers singled followed by Hackney's single to advance her to second. Garcia-Maldo singled to make the bases loaded. Madison Stanfield walked which scored Parker. Howard grounded out but scored Hackney and advanced Garcia-Maldo and Stanfield. Nash doubled to score Garcia-Maldo and Stanfield and Nash stole third. Nash would stay at third for the rest of the inning. In the top of the third inning the Celtics scored 0 runs with 0 hits. In the bottom of the third for the Mountaineers Mercedes Stanfield reached first on an error followed by Parker walked. Parsons reached first on a fielder's choice that got Stanfield out at third. Hackney singled to score Parker, Parsons got out at third. Garcia-Maldo was hit by a pitch and Hackney moved to second where they would stay for the rest of the inning. In the top of the fourth inning the Celtics scored 1 run on 2 hits and 1 error. In the bottom of the fourth the first three batters for the Mountaineers got out. In the top of the fifth inning the Celtics scored 0 runs on 1 hit. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Mountaineers Mercedes Stanfield doubled followed by Parsons doubled to score Stanfield. Hackney was hit by a pitch followed by Stanfield single to score Parsons and advance Hackney to second. Hackney advanced to third and Stanfield advanced to second on the throw. Howard singled to score Hackney and Stanfield to end the game due to run rule.

The Mountaineers beat the Celtics 9-1. Hackney led the Mountaineers with 2 hits. Howard had 3 RBI's and Smith picked up the win in the circle.

The Mountaineers will play next Saturday against Hiwassee College at 2 pm with the second game to follow.
