Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Cumberlands

Williamsburg, KY- The Berea College Softball team returned to action on Friday during a doubleheader against the University of the Cumberlands.

During the first game the Mountaineers started off hot with Mercedes Stanfield hitting a grand slam to earn the Mountaineers 4 runs. In the second inning the Patriots scored 1 run from a lone homerun and also tacked on 1 more run during this inning. The patriots would score another run in the fifth but the Mountaineers clinched the win by earning 1 run in the top of the seventh. Berea College won 5-3 against the University of the Cumberlands in the first game of the double header.

Jacquelyne Howard picked up the win in the circle. Mercedes Stanfield led the Mountaineers with three hits and four RBI's.

In the second game of the doubleheader the Patriots started out hot by scoring 4 runs in the first inning. While the Mountaineers could not follow suit and scored 0. The Patriots scored another run in the second inning followed by 3 runs in the third inning while the Mountaineers remained scoreless. The fourth inning would remain scoreless by both teams. In the top of the fifth inning the Mountaineers were able to score 1 run but the game was over due to run rule. The Mountaineers lost this game against the University of the Cumberlands 9-1.

Nash, Lanham, Parsons, and Madison Stanfield each had one hit for the Mountaineers.  Setters had one RBI and Smith pitched this game.
