Berea Sweeps Hiwassee At Home Opener

Berea, Ky- The Berea College softball team competed in a doubleheader in their home opener this weekend. Berea was able to pick up both wins against Hiwassee bringing their season record to 2-2.

The Mountaineers beat the Hiwassee tigers 11-7 in the first game of the day. Hiwassee College started out the first inning with the first run of the day. The Mountaineers came out hot in the second inning scoring 6 runs. The Tigers tried to fight back and close in on the Mountaineers but they ended the game with 11 runs. Setters, Nash, Parker, Hackney, and Stanfield lead the Mountaineers in hitting with 2 hits each. Shivel had 3 RBIS and Howard picked up the win in the circle

The Mountaineers started out the second game strong earning 5 runs. The tigers once again started chipping away at the score and lead the game 7 – 5 in the fifth inning. The Mountaineers came back in the sixth inning leading the game 9-7. Hiwassee College tied the score up in top of the seventh inning. Howard singled in the bottom of the seventh inning followed by Nash's hit which scored Howard to win the game. Setters, Hackney, Stanfield, and Howard led the Mountaineers in hitting with 3 hits each. Baker and Howard split the win in the circle.

The Mountaineers will be back in action Saturday February 24th at Franklin College.
