BEREA, Ky. –

Berea College hosted USA South Conference opponent Averett University in a double-header. Unfortunately for The Mountaineers, they were swept by the Cougars behind an impressive offensive and pitching performances by the team.

In game 1, The Cougars were able to shutout the Mountaineers and ended the game 8-0. Berea was able to only muster 3 hits, but still left 5 runners on base. Sophomore Savannah Fallis reached in both plate appearances, once on a walk and the other on a hit. Averett was able to convert on errors and timely hits and scored 8 runs by the 5th inning. The Cougars pitchers were able to stifle the Mountaineers bats, limiting them to only 3 hits and no runs.

In game 2, The Mountaineers' pitching gave up 6 homeruns to the Cougars, to 5 different players. The Mountaineers' offense did a bit better than they did in game 1, scoring 4 runs on 6 hits, as well as the best defensive performance for the Mountaineers so far, only giving up 1 error in the game. The Mountaineers were able to start the game with a bang, with Abby Nash hitting at 2-run homerun for the Mountaineers to give them a 2-1 lead after the 1st. However, in the next half inning, the Cougars were able to hit 3 homeruns. The Cougars never looked back after this and won game 2 of the doubleheader 13-4.

The Mountaineers will be back in action against Mary Baldwin Saturday, March 2nd.
