BEREA, KY. –

The Berea College Mountaineers hosted USA South Conference opponent Mary Baldwin University in a double-header. The Mountaineers were able to bring out the bats in this series and sweep the Fighting Squirrels.

In game one, the Mountaineers were able to hit the cover off the ball, rounding up 19 hits and 11 RBIs. The top of the order for the Mountaineers had 14 hits, 4 by senior Jacqui Howard, 3 by junior Abby Nash, and 3 by sophomore Savannah Fallis. Fallis also drove in 4 RBIs in the game. The Fighting Squirrels were staying on pace with the Mountaineers, rounding up 12 hits and scoring 9 runs, including the 3 runs in the top of the 7th to take a 1-run lead.

Senior Mattie Shivel was able to record her first homerun of the season in the bottom of the 7th to walk-off the Mountaineers and give them the 11-9 win.

In game two, the Mountaineers were again in a back-and-forth game against the Fighting Squirrels, but freshman pitcher Kara Winchester was able to shut-down the Fighting Squirrels in the final 3 innings to earn the win. The top of the order for the Mountaineers were again red-hot, totaling 11 of the 15 hits. Junior Audre Lindsey and Senior Mattie Shivel drove in two-runs each. Berea's defense had an excellent performance, not having a single error all game.

 

The Mountaineers will be back in action Friday, March 8th in a double-header against Franklin College at Franklin, Indiana.
