Small's Last Second Lay-Up Sends Mountaineers Past Scots

Maryville, TN- The women's basketball team headed south to take on conference member Maryville College.  Maryville is currently the top team in the West in latest USA South poll.  The game had many lead changes but a last second shot by Berea's Zacchea Small gave Berea the 75-74 win.  This win puts the Mountaineers at 10-2 and 4-1 in conference play. 

Berea started the game strong leading 20-11 after the first quarter.  The Mountaineers were outscored 22-17 in the second quarter but hung onto a 37-33 lead going into the half.  Maryville fought back and tied the game with 5:58 remaining.  With 19 seconds left in the game the Mountaineers found themselves down by 3, 74-71.  A pair of made free throws by Jamie Roberts brought the Mountaineers to within 1.  Zacchea Small drove in and made the game winning layup with only one second remaining to give the Mountaineer the 75-74 win.

Adriana Williams led the Mountaineers with 20 points also adding a team high 5 assists and 5 steals.  Three other Mountaineers scored double digits with Jamie Roberts having 15, Bri Lanham 14 and Zacchea Small with 10.  Nakeisha Greene led the team under the glass pulling in 10 rebounds. 

Berea will be back in action on the road this weekend against Piedmont College on January 19.  Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
