Demorest, GA- The women's basketball team headed back on the road to take on last year's conference champions Piedmont College. In this road test, The Mountaineers shot 41% from the 3-point line which helped them beat the Lions 72-65 to keep them atop of the West Division of the USA South. This brings the Mountaineers record to 11-2 and 5-1 in conference play.
Berea got off to a strong start which saw them lead the Piedmont Lions 23-14 after the first quarter. In flexing their muscles, the Mountaineers only allowed Piedmont to have the lead for a total of less than a minute in the whole game, which occurred in the 8:52 mark to the 8:00 mark of the first quarter. Going into the half, The Mountaineers were leading 37-32.
The second half consisted of the same as the first, as the Lions seemed to be outplayed by the Mountaineers by their outstanding rebounding and shooting. However, early on in the fourth quarter, the Lions went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead by 2, but thanks to a turnover forced by Senior AD Williams and a 3-pointer by Sophomore Kristen Barnes, The Mountaineers regained momentum and won the contest 72-65.
The Mountaineers were led by Brianna Lanham's 18 points and 7 rebounds, and AD Williams's 14 points, 8 assists, and 8 steals.
Berea College will be back in action on the road this upcoming Wednesday, January 17th, against former USCAA opponent St. Mary of the Woods on the road. Tip-off is set for 7:00pm.
