Berea Opens the Season with a Win on the Road

WILMORE, KY.—Berea College women's basketball opened its season by defeating Asbury University, 83-67 on the road at Asbury.

The Mountaineers (1-0) limited the run-and-gun Eagles (3-1) to their lowest mark in both field goal percentage 37% and from beyond the arc 17.9%. The Mountaineers flexed their muscles by out rebounding the Eagles 50-30 and out-scoring them 21 to 4 on 2nd chance points. The Mountaineers bench also contributed 37 points.

Freshman guard Aaliyah Hampton in her first colligate game scored a game high 22 pints. The Hopkinsville, Kentucky native went 6-14 from the field and 9-11 on the charity line. She also added 4 steals and 4 rebounds. Behind Hampton was senior guard Bethanie Williams, who scored 14 points, going 4-5 from beyond the arc and adding 3 boards. Freshman guard Destiny Combs also scored a double-double in her first colligate game off the bench, scoring 13 points and adding 11 boards.

Autumn Herriford and Zaria Napier both paced the Eagles with 16 points. The duo combined for almost half of Asbury's total points.

After a tightly contested first half, the Mountaineers really showed their class during the third quarter, where they outscored the Eagles 31-20, led by Williams' three 3-pointers early in the quarter to set the tone. Asbury continued to show a full-court press but was unsuccessful in slowing down the Mountaineers offense in the quarter.

Up next, the Mountaineers will play their home-opener against Sewanee University (Nov 12). Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Roland Wierwille Court.
