Berea Defeats Sewanee in Home Opener

BEREA, KY.- Berea College women's basketball defeated The University of the South Tuesday night in their home opener 65-58 at the Seabury Center.

The Mountaineer's (2-0) had an off night shooting, only shooting 31% from the field and 12.5% beyond the arc, however the defense stepped up, creating 15 turnovers, getting 46 boards, and limiting the Tigers to only 4 second chance points. The Mountaineers also took advantage when they were given free throws, going 27-36 from the line.

Freshman guard Aaliyah Hampton again led the game in scoring with 28 points, 14 of those coming from the line. Hampton also added 4 boards. Freshman guard Destiney Combs also added 11 points and 7 rebounds. Senior forward Nakeisha Greene also had a game-high 16 points.

Kinsley Logan for the Tigers scored 20 points, going 4-9 from beyond the arc, leading the Tigers in both scoring and shooting percentage. Abby Young also contributed 11 points for the Tigers.

After a very slow 1st quarter where only 13 total points were scored between the two teams, the Mountaineers ended up trailing after the 1st half. However, the Mountaineers really kicked it into another gear in the 2nd half, outscoring the Tigers by 8 points to close out the game. Ultimately defeating the Tigers by 7.

Up next, the Mountaineers will play in their homecoming game this Saturday against Campbellsville University-Harrodsburg (Nov 16). Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m at the Roland Wierwille Court.
