Mountaineers Back on Track with Win

BEREA, KY—After dropping Tuesday night's game against #11 Transylvania University, the Mountaineers got back on track with a win against old KIAC conference rivals Indiana University-Southeast 78-64. The Mountaineers dominated the game in the Seabury Center, having the lead for 37:13 minutes of the game.

The Mountaineers continued their dominance on the board, out-rebounding the Grenadiers 42-35. The Mountaineers also heavily improved their shooting from the previous few games, shooting 43.6% from the field, out-scoring the Grenadiers 34-24 in the paint. Defense continued to stay strong, not allowing the Grenadiers to score more than 20 points in a quarter until the 4th, as well as forcing 18 turnovers. The Mountaineers shot 39 free throws, only converting 26 of them to shoot 66.7% for the night.

Freshman guard Aaliyah Hampton (Hopkinsville, KY), had a game-high 22 points, leading the Mountaineers in scoring for the 5th straight game. Hampton also added 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Hampton shot 7-15 from the field, including 1-2 from beyond the arc, and added 7 free-throws. Sophomore Bailee Vanover (Richmond, KY), was not far behind Hampton, scoring 20 points, adding 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Vanover shot 6-10 from the field, adding 8 free-throws. Freshman Destiny Combs, (Louisville, KY), almost scored her second double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Both Hannah Coleman and Natalie Fichter led the way for the Grenadiers, scoring 12 points but in different ways. Coleman score most of hers from the paint and the charity stripe, going 3-9 from the field and 6-8 from the free-throw line. Coleman also added 9 boards. Fichter scored most of her points from beyond the arc, shooting a game-best 3-5 from beyond the arc.

The Mountaineers was a little slow coming out of the gates, only scoring 32 points in the first half. However coming out the half, the Mountaineers took it to another gear, going on a 21 point run to end the 3rd quarter and eventually out-scoring the Grenadiers 28-10 in the quarter to take a comfortable lead.

Up next, the Mountaineers will host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Saturday (Nov. 23). Tipoff is slated for 1:00pm at the Roland Wierwille Court.
