Mountaineers Roll Past the Lions on the Road

                The Berea College Women's Basketball team played on the road against the Piedmont College Lions. The Mountaineers ended up winning even with a rough start in the first half where they suffered a double-digit deficit. This win against the defending USA South Conference Champions improved the Lady Mountaineers' record to 13-2. In the USA South Conference, this win helped continue their undefeated record to 6-0. They are also now on an 8-game winning streak.

The Mountaineers shot 33.9% (21-62) from field, while Piedmont shot 40.7% (24-59). The Lions was out-rebounded by the Mountaineers 54 to 37. Berea's rebounding and 3-pointers helped bring them out on top of Piedmont in the final box score. Berea shot 34 free throws and only hit 20 shooting 58.8% from the charity stripe. There were 5 ties and only 1 lead change which was in the second quarter.

In the first quarter, the Mountaineers trailed 16-9, but once the Mountaineers got going and took the lead, the Mountaineers led the rest of the game. With leading scorer for the Mountaineers, freshman guard Aaliyah Hampton (Hopkinsville, KY), in foul trouble early on, sophomore guard Bailee Vanover (Richmond, KY), stepped up in a big way, playing the entire 40 minutes scoring 18 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Vanover also shot an impressive 50% from the 3-point line. Freshman forward Destiny Combs also stepped up with her first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Seniors Bethanie Williams and Briana Lanham also scored double-digits, both respectively scoring 15 points and 10 points.

Piedmont Lions was led by Nakiyah Washington, who shot 50% from the field and scored 12 points with 3 rebounds. Following behind Washington was the 2018-2019 USA South Player of the Year, Amari Price playing 39 mins with 13 assist, 7 steals, and 5 rebounds.

The Mountaineers will be back in action Sunday, January 12th playing against division opponent Wesleyan (Ga.) in Macon, GA.
