Berea, KY – The Berea College women's soccer team pulled out a hard-fought win on Thursday night as the Mountaineers took down Spalding University 1-0 in overtime. Sohara Perez scored the winning goal at the 91:28 minute mark, while Berea goalie Jade Fulkerson picked up her first win of the season with six saves in the victory.
The Mountaineers and the Golden Eagles fought back and forth the entire game as both teams put on a defensive showcase keeping the nets clear for 90 minutes. Berea owned possession time of the ball during the first half and moved the ball around nicely, advancing up the field as a single unit. However, Spalding was able to contain Berea's offense and keep the score at 0-0 going into halftime. Berea held the Golden Eagles to one shot during the 45 minutes, while putting up seven on Spalding's goalie Kayla Strehle.
The Golden Eagles were able to get their offense going a little more in the second half, but the Berea defense would not give up anything. Fulkerson subbed in as keeper for Amber Follin in the second half and picked up right where Follin left off completing the shutout for the Mountaineer defense.
After 90 minutes of play, the score was still all tied up and the teams were heading into overtime. In the 91st minute, Spalding picked up a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Perez quickly placed the ball and drilled a beautiful shot right past the keeper giving the Mountaineers the 1-0 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Follin finished with one save during her 45 minutes of play, while her counterpart Strehle stopped nine in the loss.
Berea held the advantage in shots 15-9, while Spalding led in corner kicks, 5-3.
The Berea College women's soccer team will be back in action at home on Saturday, October 13. The Mountaineers will host the Wesleyan College Wolves at 4:30 p.m. at the Berea College Sports Complex.
