Berea Starts Season with a Win on the Road

Swannanoa, NC- The Berea College women's soccer team traveled to North Carolina on Saturday to take on Warren Wilson. The Mountaineers dominated for most of the game, winning their season opener against the Owls 3-1.

 

At the start of the half, Berea wasted no time to begin their attack on Warren Wilson. Coming up on the 29:14 minute mark, sophomore Bailee Vanover scored with an assist from senior Madilyn Hord. Building off of the goal, Berea continued to push for another goal for the remainder of the half dominating possession for the rest of the half. However, they were fruitless as the score stayed 1-0.

 

In the second half, the Mountaineers continued to hold off the Owls from scoring. The Mountaineers extended their lead at the 37:41 minute mark with a goal from junior Stacey Keruwa off a corner kick. Soon after at the 24:52 minute mark, Vanover scored the third goal for Berea, and her second of the game, extending the lead to 3-0. However, at the 6:39 minute mark Warren Wilson scored a goal off a penalty kick bringing the final score of the game to 3-1.

 

Berea's Jade Fulkerson had 6 saves, and Warren Wilson's Susie Lusardi had 5.

 

Berea had 18 shots versus Warren Wilson's 8, and Berea had a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.

 

Up next, the Mountaineers will be hosting Earlham on Wednesday, September 4 at the BC Sports Complex.
