Macon, GA- The Mountaineers traveled to play Wesleyan College (GA) on Saturday, October 6th for their third conference matchup. After a hard fought game against the Wolves, Berea women's soccer came out on top and pulled their first conference win of the season against their opponents 3-2 in double-overtime.
In the first half, Berea controlled the ball against the Wolves. They worked the field well up until the 12:19 minute, where Wesleyan's Fetlework Blitch scored a goal for the Wolves on the counter-attack. The Mountaineers were determined to get the goal back against their opponents. All their efforts paid off at the 20:11 minute mark, where Berea's Bailee Vanover scored and tied up the score 1-1. Shortly after the goal from Vanover, another goal at the 25:15 minute by Berea's Glendy Pineda with an assist from Katie Roach. Now in the lead, the Mountaineers stayed composed and worked the ball well around the field for the rest of the half. Wesleyan was denied any opportunities of scoring, and the half ended with Berea in the lead 2-1.
In the second half, Berea maintained their intensity and came out strong against Wesleyan. At the 54:08 minute mark, the Wolves' Alyssa Key scored from an assist by Thi Soe. The game now tied once again, both teams worked with a sense of urgency to score again before the half was up. Berea was close several times, but were unable to convert any opportunities. With the score tied 2-2 the game went into overtime.
In overtime, Berea and Wesleyan left everything on the field for the conference victory. Not giving each other an inch, the game soon went into double-overtime. The Mountaineers' conditioning showed in the double-overtime, where the Mountaineers controlled the game with their control of the ball. Their efforts paid off and at the 104:01 minute mark when Bailee Vanover scored the golden goal for the Mountaineers, winning their first conference game 3-2 against the Wolves.
Berea's Jade Fulkerson had 10, and Wesleyan's Carlee Dykes had 15.
Berea had 28 shots versus Wesleyan's 21, and both had an equal advantage on corner kicks 1-1.
Up next, the Mountaineers will face off against Piedmont on Sunday, October 6 at 1pm for another conference game.
