Berea Women's Track and Field Team Compete at the UIndy Challenge

Indianapolis, IN - The Berea College Women's track and field team traveled to the University of Indianapolis to take part in the UIndy Track and Field Challenge.  This meet marked the season opener for the Mountaineer Squad.  A few saw action on January 16th at the Kentucky Invitational but this would be the first time the entire Mountaineer squad hit the indoor track after being snowed in last week and having to cancel a meet.

The UIndy Challenge started on Friday, January 29th.  The women's team saw several great finishes on the first day of action including a new school record.   Cassandra McFadden and Rebecca Dixon finished 15th and 17th of 39 in the 200m Dash.  Simone Brown took 4th place in the High Jump with a jump of 1.57m.  On her final attempt she well exceeded the height but barley caught the bar on the way down.  The night ended with a 4th place finish and new school record in the Distance Medley Relay.  The DMR team included Gabriella Sabino, Jenna Hughes, Layne Callow and Erin Gonterman.  Their time of 13:30.67 bettered the old school record by over a minute.

Many more members of the Berea College women's track and field team saw action on day two of the meet.  Brown started the day off for the Mountaineers in the triple jump.  Her jump of 9.81m was good enough to make the finals and finish 7th overall.  Mcfadden also carried her success over from day one and on day two finished 13th of 45 with a time of 8.28.  Erin Gonterman picked up a pair of top 10 finishes in the mile run and the 1000m run.  In the mile Erin finished 9th and set a personal best time of 5:34.02.  Following close behind was teammate Gabriella Sabino in 11th place with a time of 5:36.37.  In the 800m run freshman Jenna Hughes finished 8th with a new personal best of 2:31.91, right behind her was Sabino in 9th.  Senior Layne Callow ran away from her heat finishing nine seconds ahead of the second finisher.  Her time of 1:43.33 placed her 4th overall and was a new school record.  The women's 4x400 relay team capped the night off with a 5th place finish in a time of 4:21.71.  The team was made up of Callow, Dixon, Hughes and Sabino.

The Berea Track and Field teams will head to Anderson University on February 6th.  The meet is set to start at 3:00 PM.
