WILLIAMSBURG, KY- The Berea College Mountaineers traveled to the University of the Cumberlands to compete in the invitational hosted by the Patriots. The women had a great amount of success competing this past Friday and Saturday.
The women's 4x800 relay team competed on Friday night in the cold, rain and windy conditions. Despite the harsh conditions the team won the event and shattered the previous school record by twenty-six seconds running a time of 9:51.73. This team was made up of Gabriella Sabino, Erin Gonterman, Layne Callow and Jenna Hughes.
Saturday was filled with many more outstanding performances. Layne Callow brought home 3rd place and a PR in the 800m with a time of 2:20.99. She was followed by Hughes who placed 9th with a time of 2:31.27. Gabriella Sabino came in shortly after with time of 2:36.33, placing 13th followed by Megan Hale who placed 15th with a time of 2:36.94. Erin Gonterman brought home 3rd place in the 1500m with a PR time of 4:57.42. Sabino followed with a time of 5:14.25, placing 8th.
The sprint squad hit the track in full stride. Cassandra McFadden brought home 7th place in the 100m with a time of 13.62. In the 200m, freshman Rebecca Dixon finished 13th with a time of 28.53. Grace Callow earned 10th place in the 400m with a time of 1:07.04. Adding hurdles to the mix, Annah Pierce placed 6th with a time of 1:13.92 in the 400m hurdles. The 4x400 relay team placed 2nd with a time of 4:19. The team was made up of Dixon, Grace Callow, Layne Callow, and Jenna Hughes.
On the field, the women continued the track squad's success. Amber "Bre" Sims brought home another first place finish in the javelin with a distance of 34.63m. LeAnna Luney placed 4th with a throw of 27.24m. Luney placed 10th in the shot put with a throw of 10.53m. Simone Brown brought home 1st place in the high jump with a height of 1.57m. Brown also placed 10th in the long jump with a distance of 4.38m. Amy Angevine placed 4th in the pole vault with a height of 2.45m.
The women will travel to Danville, Kentucky this weekend for the Centre Twilight Invitational this Friday.
