DeNigris Breaks 5K School Record to Finish Runner-Up at the Bellarmine Invitational

Louisville, KY - This Saturday, the Mountaineers competed at the Bellarmine University Classic. Participating in the meet were several teams from Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana.

The first event on the track was the 5000 meter race where junior Dove Denigris finished with a time of 18:31 earning a second place finish and breaking the previous school record of 18:42.  Following Denigris was sophomore Ivanna Sabino finishing 17th in 20:47. The mountaineers also had a strong showing in the 3000m steeplechase led by Delaney Williams who finished 2nd with a time of 11:54. Following Williams was senior Erin Gonterman finishing 7th in 12:32. Numerous Mountaineers competed in the 1500 meter run led by freshman Abigail Schlenker finishing 6th in 4:52 and followed by sophomore Hayley Clark (5:30), freshman Rachel Melstead (5:35), freshman Tylan Eastham (5:36), sophomore Caitlyn Roberts (5:42), Sydney Shackleford (6:05), and sophomore Brittany Ortiz-Perez (6:16). Junior Jenna Hughes led the Mountaineers in the 800 meter dash finishing with a time of 2:28. Following Hughes in the event was Abigail Schlenker (2:29), Erin Gonterman (2:40), Rachel Melstead (2:41), Hayley Clark (2:51),  Sydney Shackleford (2:52), senior Jillian Kendall (2:53),  Caitlyn Roberts (2:59), Tylan Eastham (3:03), and Brittany Ortiz-Perez (3:05).

The Mountaineers also had a series of impressive performances in the sprinting events. In the 100 meter dash, four women earned top 10 finishes. Finishing in 4th place was freshman Khatirah Malik with a time of 12.58 seconds. Following closely behind Malik was Sophomore Kaylee Robinson finishing 6th in 12.84 seconds. The third Mountaineer across the line was senior Cassandra McFadden earning 8th place in 12.93. In 10th place with a time of 12.97 was senior Kierra Moore. Other competitors in the 100 meter were sophomore Alli Silas (13.13), sophomore Allison Dallman (13.82), freshman Zita Erez (14.45), and freshman Wendy Quanon (15.19). In the 200m dash, Kaylee Robinson placed 5th in 26.53 and Alli Silas placed 10th in 27.60. In the 400 meter dash,  freshman Destinee Henry finished 12th in 1:05.18. Henry also competed in the 100 meter hurdles finishing 8th in 16.97. Following Henry was Junior Kearstin Tingle with a time of 19.43 seconds. In the 4x100 meter relay, a team consisting of Alli Silas, Kaylee Robinson, Khatirah Malik, and Cassandra McFadden placed 4th with a time of 50.08. Rounding out the running events for the women was sophomore Delaney Williams finishing 12th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:13.89.

In the high jump, Allison Dallman earned 7th place with a jump of 1.47 meters and Jenna Hughes finished 10th with 1.37 meters. Kierra Moore had an outstanding performance in the long jump winning the event with a jump of 5.21 meters. Also participating in the long jump was Destinee Henry finshing 11th and jumping 4.62 meters.

Sophomore Maya Riddles led the Mountaineers in the shot put getting 10th and throwing 10.37 meters. Following Riddles was freshman Clarisa Williams with a throw of 7.13 meters. Riddles and Williams placed 13th and 14th in the Javelin competition with throws of 14.94 meters (Riddles) and 14.11 meters (Williams). Riddles also competed in the hammer throw and finished 9th throwing 33.01 meters.

Next weekend the Mountaineers will compete at home against other teams in the USA South Conference for the Atlantic Independent Championships.
