Berea Opens Outdoor Season at the Rhodes

Memphis, TN- This weekend the Berea College Women's Track and Field team kicked off their 2019 outdoor season at the Rhodes Invitational hosted by Rhodes College. In a highly competitive meet, the women had a great showing to begin their season.

On Friday night, junior Hayley Clark raced in the 5,000 meter run, with a time of 20:08, placing 52nd. Following Clark, also competing in the 5,000 meter run were sophomore Rachel Melstead with a time of 20:25, Caitlyn Roberts with a time of 20:40, and Bethany Bigler who ran 22:27.

 

Saturday proved to be another good day for competition, starting with the womens one mile race. Sophomore Jamie Welch ran 5:29, placing in 15th. Freshman Mary Beth Mellhuish followed, running 5:45 and placing 25th. Other finishers for Berea include junior Hayley Clark (6:01, 36th), sophomore Tylan Eastham (6:08, 40th), senior Jenna Hughes (6:10, 43rd), junior Caitlyn Roberts (6:11, 45th), freshman Bethany Bigler (6:22, 50th ), and sophomore Brittany Ortiz (6:26 ,53rd). In the 100 meter hurdles, sophomore Destinee Henry placed 27th with her time of 18.15, followed by senior Kearstin Tingle in 29th place running 19.30. Junior Kaylee Robinson had an outstanding performance in the 400 meter dash, running 1:00.09, and earning her 7th place. Kearstin Tingle followed, in 31st place, running 1:12.33. In the 100 meter dash, sophomore Khatirah Malik ran 12.91, and placed her 16th overall. Freshman Mildred Goins followed, in 45th place, running 14.17. Many athletes raced in the 800 meter dash, and was led by Jamie Welch (2:34, 21st). Following Welch, Mary Beth Mellhuish (2:42, 31st), Jenna Hughes (2:45, 37th), Tylan Eastham (2:45, 39th), and Brittany Ortiz-Perez (2:57, 49th). In the 400 meter hurdles, Destinee Henry earned 18th place with time of 1:12.58. In the 200 meter dash, Kaylee Robinson placed 14th, and ran a speedy time of 26.56. Directly following Robinson was Khatirah Malik with a 26.57 (15th). Kearstin Tingle ended with 31.44 (61st). The final race of the evening was the 3000 meter steeple chase where junior Ivanna Sabino ended in 13th place, with a finishing time of 12:52.

 

For field events, Berea had Mildred Goins, jump 4.49m in the long jump, earning her 26th place. Following, Destinee Henry jumped 4.48m (27th).in long jump. Junior Maya Riddles placed 25th in the hammer throw, with her throw of 32.46m, and 26th in shot put with 9.24m.

 

The women's team will travel to Transylvania University on Friday and Saturday March 22nd – 23rd to compete in the Pioneer Invitational.
