Women's T&F Finish 3rd at Pioneer Invite

Lexington, KY.- The Berea track and field team travelled to Lexington over the weekend to compete in the Transy Pioneer Invitational hosted by Transylvania University. The meet included many Division 3 teams as well as a couple NAIA teams. Berea finished the meet with a team score of 102 points, placing 3rd out of 16 teams.

Competition started on Friday night with numerous Mountaineers participating in the 10,000 meter race. Junior Hayley Clark won the race in a time of 42:25 with junior Caitlyn Roberts finishing 3rd in 44:11 and freshman Bethany Bigler finishing 5th in 45:52. Saturday morning's running events began with the 3,000 meter steeplechase where Junior Ivanna Sabino finished 3rd with a time of 12:53. Freshman Marybeth Melhuish crossed the line just behind Sabino finishing in 4th place in 12:58. In the 1500 meter race, Junior Jamie Welch had a strong performance finishing in second place with a time of 5:00.92. In the 800 meter race, freshman Katie Roach finished in 17th with a personal record time of 2:45. The last distance running event of the day was the 5,000 meter race where senior Dove DiNigris crossed the line in second place in 19:24. Sophomore Tylan Eastham finished the race in 21:55 placing 11th.

Numerous Mountaineers also had top ten finishes in the sprinting events. In the 100 meter dash, sophomore Khatirah Malik placed 3rd in 12.88 seconds while junior Kaylee Robinson finished the in 13.77 and freshman Jada Harper placed 14th in 13.56 seconds. Robinson and Malik also had strong showings in the 200 meter dash where Robinson won the race in 26.61 seconds and Malik finished 2nd in 26.72. Freshman Leta Heigly finished the race in 12th place with a time of 28.22. In the 100 meter hurdle race, sophomore Destinee Henry finished 4th in 16.48 seconds while freshman Mildred Goins finished 14th in 18.4 seconds. Henry also competed in the 400 meter hurdles, placing 5th with a time of 1:09. Henry competed in the long jump as well placing 11th with a jump of 4.74 meters. In the triple jump competition, Henry finished in 5th place jumping 10.43 meters while Mildred Goins finished 8th with a jump of 9.58 meters. Berea finished 2nd in the 4x100 meter relay crossing the line in 49.67 seconds.

Next up for the Mountaineers is the Centre College Invitational on March 30th.
