Mountaineers Drop Conference Game Against Maryville

Mountaineers Drop Conference Game Against Maryville

Berea, KY- After spending eight consecutive matches on the road, the volleyball team returned to the Seabury Center for a conference game in the USA South against a divisional opponent. The team took the court against the Maryville College (Tenn.) Scots this evening.

The opening segments of the first set saw a close contest between the two teams until Maryville took a five point lead off an attack error by the Mountaineers to lead 12-7. An attempt to rally back and take the lead fell short by Berea as the Scots went on to win the first set 25-23.

The second set saw the Mountaineers take a 4-3 lead before Maryville used a 7-3 run to move ahead 10-7. The deficit soon went away for Berea as they scored four straight points, which included two kills from Addie Bowman and Isis Hill, giving them an 11-10 lead. The match swayed in the Mountaineers favor over the next couple of points until a rally by the Scots tied the game and allowed them to take the second set and a 2-0 lead by a score of 26-24.

The match became a back and forth contest in the third set, seeing multiple ties and neither team taking a substantial lead in the opening minutes. Maryville eventually took over the momentum in the set as the Scots used a 25-18 third set victory to win the match 3-0.

Berea remains on their home court for their next two matches as they host a tri-match against two conference opponents in the USA South. Divisional opponent Wesleyan College (Ga.) and East Division opponent Piedmont College will be the opponents in the tri-match on Saturday. The game against Wesleyan is scheduled for 12:00 PM and the first serve for the match against Piedmont set for 4:00 PM, both to be played in the Seabury Center.
