Louisville, KY. - Transylvania University defeated Berea College volleyball in three straight sets on Tuesday night as the two teams faced off at the Beck Center.
In the first set, Berea College got off to a quick start leading Transylvania 4-1 with a kill by Katherine Gonterman and consecutive errors by Transylvania. However, the host Pioneers quickly went on a streak to score seven points to lead Berea 8-4. The Mountaineers tried to battle back scoring three consecutive points, but Transylvania continued to build momentum as they took advantage of a few attack errors by Berea. Numerous kills from the Pioneers helped to win the set 25-12.
The second set was very similar to the first, with Berea scoring the first point off of an attack error by Transylvania. The score once again was 8-4 in favor of the Pioneers with Transylvania adding quickly to their lead. The Pioneers continued to dominate the set until Transylvania eventually bested Berea 25-11.
Berea had their best performance in the third and final set. Transylvania jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start. A kill by Carolina Robles helped the Mountaineers build enough momentum for Jaleah Patton, Kristen Barnes, Katherine Gonterman, and Hannah Headrick to also get kills during the set. Berea's attacks and numerous errors by the Pioneers helped the Mountaineers keep the score close. However, Transylvania outlasted Berea for a 25-21 set win to take the match.
Katherine Gonterman and Hannah Headrick led the Mountaineers with five kills each. Jonesy McGregor was the top Mountaineer when it came to assists tallying a total of 11. The defense was led by Kristen Barnes with eight digs, while Carolina Robles contributed seven.
Up next, Berea looks to pick up their first win as they face Alice Lloyd on Friday at 6 p.m. This match marks the home opener for the Mountaineers as they will face the Eagles in the Seabury Center.
