Berea, KY. – The Mountaineers came out looking to take care of business early and earned their first victory of the season Friday night. Their NAIA in state rival, Alice Lloyd, stood no chance during the three set match. Berea dominated the court all night and continued a poised effort from the first whistle. The Eagles continuously found themselves on the wrong end of Berea's fierce serves.

In the first set, the Mountaineers had the edge from the beginning. Strong serves, soft sets, and agile blocks paved the route for the early success. Fundamentally, Berea was smooth and the team was playing with great confidence. The Mountaineers ran away with the set 25-12.

Starting the second set, Berea kept up pace offensively and defensively after the strong first set. Alice Lloyd simply could not find an answer to Berea's success and the Mountaineers pushed the lead to two sets with a 25-19 victory.

The third set started a little slower for Berea and the Eagles jumped out to an early lead. After a refreshing timeout, the Mountaineers were ready to fight back. Alice Lloyd continued their late-game push, but Berea bound together and tightened up their defense. The Mountaineers battled through fatigue and completed the job, for the final set win (25-22) and sweep.

Berea had a season high 10 aces with Carolina Robles leading the way with four. Hannah Headrick and Robles led the Mountaineers' offense with 10 kills each with another five from Katherine Gonterman. Jonesy McGregor finished with 12 assists and Robles added eight. On the defensive side, Berea had multiple players step up including Eliza Lavin with eight digs, while Kristin Barnes and Headrick each tacked on seven and another six from McGregor.

The Berea Mountaineers will be back in action Tuesday, September 18, against Oakland City University at 6:00 pm in the Seabury center.
