Brevard, N.C. – The Berea women's volleyball team traveled to Brevard, N.C. Saturday for a conference tri-match against Huntingdon and Brevard. The Hawks defeated the Mountaineers 3-1 and in the night cap, Berea fell to the Tornados 3-0.

Huntingdon controlled the first and second set of Berea's first match with scores of 25-12 and 25-8. The teams battled back and forth throughout the third set with multiple lead changes. The Mountaineers took control after a Katherine Gonterman kill to grab the lead, but the Hawks stuck around to tie the score once more at 16-16 and 17-17. Kills from Addie Bowman, Hannah Headrick and Gonterman plus attack errors on Huntingdon, allowed Berea to take the third set, 25-21. During the fourth set, the Hawks jumped out to an early three point lead before the Mountaineers offense showed some fight. Berea tied the set a 6-6 then grabbed the lead following a Huntingdon error. The Hawks answered right back to take a commanding lead of 24-15. The Mountaineers offense picked up with four straight points before a Hawk kill sealed the final set 25-19.

Headrick led the offense with nine kills with Gonterman close behind with seven. Jonesy McGregor finished with 23 assists and Headrick had four aces for the Mountaineers. Eliza Lavin held strong for the defense with 14 digs, while Bowman and McGregor added seven and six digs, respectively.

Berea's second match started slow for the Mountaineers with Brevard jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. Berea answered with four straight points to tie the set and get out to their own lead of 9-5. The teams went back and forth the rest of the set before a Tornado kill gave Brevard the set win, 25-21. The Tornados cruised in the second set to a 25-13 win for Brevard. To open the third set, Jaleah Patton started with a kill for the Mountaineers. The third set was very much like the first between the teams with neither giving up too much ground. Berea cut Brevard's lead down to 22-20, but three straight points from the Tornados lifted Brevard to a 3-0 victory.

Berea's offense was led by Patton and Gonterman each recording six kills. McGregor continued in the second game with another 20 assists, while Lavin led the defense again with 13 digs to add to her daily total. Kristin Barnes and McGregor added nine and seven digs, respectively for the Mountaineers.

Up next for volleyball, Berea will host conference rival Maryville College Wednesday, October 17 at 7 p.m. The athletics department is inviting all students and the community to come support the Mountaineers for a "Blue White Night" during the match.
