Berea, KY- On Wednesday, Berea volleyball took on conference opponent Maryville College at the Seabury Center. The Mountaineers were defeated in three sets with scores of 25-11, 25-22 and 25-17.

In the first set, Maryville and Berea balanced between serves with both teams battling hard. The match was as close as 16-11 before Maryville pulled away. While the set included five team kills by Berea, the Mountaineers were not able to match Maryville's team total 11 and lost the set 25-11.

During the second set, the Scots capitalized early, but the Mountaineers were able to manage the attack to get back on pace. The two teams went back and forth deep into the set, while Hannah Headrick responded with multiple kills to help give the Mountaineers a fighting chance. However, Maryville held on to take the close second set 25-22.

The third set started in Berea's favor with the Mountaineers jumping out to an early 7-3 lead, but Maryville started to connect. The Scots pushed out to a 13-10 lead before Berea could finally even the score back out at 16. After another Maryville run, the Mountaineers were forced to take a timeout, but Berea failed to capitalize and was defeated 25-17.

Carolina Robles led the offense with five kills with Addie Bowman and Headrick behind her with four. Jonesy McGregor added nine assists for the Mountaineers, while Kristin Barnes finished with eight digs for the defense.

The Mountaineers compete again Saturday as Berea hosts conference rival Piedmont and in-state opponent Kentucky Christian. The first game of the tri-match begins at 12 p.m. at the Seabury center.
