Volleyball falls to Covenant

Lookout Mountain, GA – The Berea Mountaineer Volleyball team traveled to Covenant College Tuesday evening to face the Scots in a mid-week conference match-up. Covenant took the 3-0 victory over Berea with scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-14.

The Mountaineers started the first set off hot by taking an commanding 10-6 lead after showing some strong offensive power, but the Scots wouldn't give up. Covenant battled back to tie the set at 14-14 before taking the lead and the eventual set, 25-17.  

The Mountaineers brought back their determination into the second set, but the Scots wouldn't let Berea get out far this time. After a Mountaineer kill from Carolina Robles to tie the set at 5-5, Covenant scored seven straight points to bring the score to 12-6. Berea got back on track after the Scots scoring push to get within three after a handling error from Covenant. Berea kept up the fight, but a few Berea errors and three kills from the Scots, ended the second set with a score of 25-18 to give Covenant 2-0 lead heading into the third set.

Berea started the third much like the first two sets by jumping out to a 6-3 lead, but the Scots put up six straight points for a 9-6 score in favor of Covenant. The Scots took over from there and never looked back to take the third set 25-14 and the 3-0 match win.   

Hannah Headrick led the Mountaineers with six kills, while Katherine Gonterman, Kristin Barnes, and Carolina Robles each had five. Jonesy McGregor had 10 assists and Robles added nine. Barnes led the defense with 18 digs, while Hannah Headrick and McGregor finished with 15 and 10 digs, respectively.

Berea will be back home Saturday, October 27 for their final two matches of the season. The Mountaineers will host a tri-match consisting of LaGrange and Agnes Scott. The first match will start at 12 p.m. in Joy Hager Gymnasium.
