LaGrange, Agnes Scott defeat Berea to end season

Berea Ky. – The Berea College volleyball team hosted their final two matches of the season on Saturday at the Joy Hager Gymnasium. The Mountaineers faced LaGrange College in the first match and Agnes Scott College in the second.

LaGrange and Berea had a good battle in the first set, staying neck and neck until the last six points when Berea pulled ahead of LaGrange finishing the set 25-19. In the second set, the Mountaineers continued their winning streak. Berea trailed LaGrange until the score hit 15-15, but thanks to kills from Hannah Headrick and Kristin Barnes, the Mountaineers bounced back to take the set, 25-23.

Both teams went back and forth in the third set until a kill from LaGrange opened up an opportunity for the Panthers that gave them a four-point lead. With only four points left to stop the Panthers, Berea tried but could not deliver, giving the Panthers a winning score of 25-22.

In the fourth set, LaGrange gained a five point lead in the beginning until an attack error gave Berea a chance to catch up. The rest of the set was close with LaGrange coming back from a score of 24-20 and tying the game up at 25-25. LaGrange's effort proved to be successful and the Panthers won the set 29-27.

Berea snagged two points in the beginning of the fifth set, but LaGrange responded well and gained a nine point lead. After a timeout and an attack error from the Panthers, Berea came back and lessened the lead to 11-7. The Panthers took control from there and finished the set with a score of 15-13 to seal the match win.  

Berea's Carolina Robles had 25 digs and 17 kills, while Jonesy McGregor had 21 digs and 43 assists. Hannah Headrick recorded 13 kills and 13 digs. Kristin Barnes finished with 11 kills and had 18 digs.

Berea's second match against Agnes Scott proved to be difficult for Berea in the first set with various errors from Berea helping Agnes Scott gain a lead. The Scotties wrapped up the set with a score of 25-12. The Mountaineers improved in the second, making for a close set throughout the first half until a service error from Berea gave Agnes Scott an advantage in which they took and gained a four point lead that Berea could not come back from. Agnes Scott won the set 25-16. 

The third set was a turning point for Berea. For much of the match the Mountaineers trailed close behind the Scotties. The score was tied 21-21 when an attack error from Agnes Scott gave Berea a chance to bounce back. Carolina Robles and Hannah Headrick each recorded a kill to earn the set win for Berea with a score of 25-22. Berea held a sizeable lead throughout most of the fourth set before five straight points from the Scotties brought the score to 19-18. The Mountaineers managed to get to set point, but were unable to stop the Scotties comeback and Agnes Scott took the set 26-24 for the match victory.  

Carolina Robles led the offense for the second straight match with 16 kills and tacked on 13 digs. Jonesy McGregor recorded 30 assists, while Kristin Barnes finished with 10 digs.
